Interested in learning the historic art of timber framing?
Mohaka River Farm is partnering with Heritage Timbercraft to build a timber frame gazebo on the farm. We would like to invite you to join us for this 5 day course to learn some of the basics of the craft so you can implement them on your own structure.
We will be building a 30 square meter gazebo incorporating the following timber frame elements:
King Post Trusses
Common Rafter Pairs
Elevations with Posts, Top Plates and Housed Braces
Curved Braces
Timber framing joinery includes:
Mortise & Tennon Joint
Half-lap joint
Sloped Shoulder joint
Birds Mouth
Housings
Slotted plate housing
We will cover the following aspects:
Timber selection
Shop drawings
Layout
Cutting
Test-fitting
Finishing
Raising
Here are the details…
The class will run for 5 days.
The class size will be 6-8 people (minimum of 6 participants, if less than 6 enroll in the course we may contact you to reschedule).
The price of the course is $2250 per person. This covers the cost of the course as well as dinner each night (lunch on Friday). Breakfasts and lunches are self-catered. We are located about halfway between Napier and Taupo on Highway 5, so we recommend you bring enough food to last the week, as well as filling up on petrol before you arrive. Gas stations and grocery stores are at least an hour away in both directions!
Accommodation is available at Mohaka River Farm and is not included in the price of the course. There is a 50% discount for course participants and family members. If you would like to bring friends or family along who are not participating in the course, they can participate in the catered meals each evening for an additional $195 per person.
You will be using chisels, mallets, drills, chain mortiser, drop saw, skill saw, plunge router, trim router, sander, surface sander and hand saw. You will need to have a level of competency with hand and power tools to be able to operate the equipment safely.
